Gone With the Stitch

So here lately I’ve seen more and more people talk about cottage industries. Now a cottage industry is a business started in one’s home. A few people I know have started their own cottage industries and I wanted to highlight them. They were so gracious and let me interview them. The first interview is with Sydney Martinez and she manages Gone With the Stitch.

What does your business make?

Mainly crocheted beanies and messy bun beanies, but I really can crochet anything as long as I have a video to follow. I’ve also done scarfs, hooded scarfs, purses, and baby blankets and now washcloths.

What inspired you to start this business?

Nothing really. After I crocheted a few things I just had a thought that I might be able to sell a few things and make a few extra bucks.

How long have you been making and selling these items?

About five years ago. Stopped when I got diagnosed with MS and started back up here recently to completely get my business up and running.

Where did you get the name for your business?

Gone With the Wind is my favorite movie so it’s a play on words with that movie cause with crocheting you are doing stitches and when I get started I’m ”Gone With the Stitch.”

How do you sell the items?

On Facebook mainly to local friends and family members.

What’s your favorite item to make?

Right now the Messy Bun Beanie. I like finding different patterns for them that have different designs to them. Also when someone asks can you crochet this or that I enjoy trying something new.

Do you think you will continue on making new items and selling them?

Most definitely. There’s still a lot out there I haven’t even tried to crochet. I’ve barely started.

Who taught you to crochet?

YouTube. But I did get my Great Aunt Fay’s crochet hooks given to me.

Do you have any advice for people who are thinking of starting their own home business?

If it’s your dream and you really want to do it then do it!! You only have one life to live so live it your way!! Also don’t over price your items but price them enough that you are making a profit, and first orders should come first.

Here are a few pictures of items Sydney has made:

A little Poke ball backpack and Pikachu character.

A set of 4, 100% cotton face cloths.

An adorable Bella Rose messy bun beanie.

Crocheted headbands.

Hooded scarves.
